The four widely-recommended picks: Stonyfield Organic YoBaby Plain Whole Milk (0g added sugar, AAP-aligned), Siggi's Plain Whole Milk Skyr (0g, higher protein), Wallaby Organic Aussie Plain Whole Milk (0g), and Chobani Plain Whole Milk Greek (0g). Baby-led weaning (BLW) is the feeding approach where babies self-feed table foods from around 6 months instead of starting with pureed baby food. Yogurt is one of the most-asked-about foods for BLW because it's a soft self-feed at the textural sweet spot for early eaters — but the kid-yogurt aisle is full of products that don't match the AAP's actual guidance for under-2.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends plain whole-milk yogurt for kids under 2. The fat is required for brain development at this age; low-fat yogurts often add more sugar to compensate for flavor. The 2020–2025 US Dietary Guidelines specifically recommend zero added sugar for children under 2 — which rules out every flavored "kids" or "baby" yogurt on the market.
Of the 28 yogurts in our catalog, only the products with zero added sugar AND whole-milk fat content qualify for this hub. That's a small but real set. We include yogurts marketed for older kids (Stonyfield Plain Whole Milk, Siggi's Plain Whole Milk) since plain whole-milk yogurt is plain whole-milk yogurt regardless of marketing target.
The four widely-recommended picks. Stonyfield Organic YoBaby Plain Whole Milk is the most-recommended first yogurt for ages 6+ months — 0g added sugar, USDA Organic, documented probiotic strains (B. lactis BB-12, L. acidophilus LA-5) at clinically relevant CFU counts. Siggi's Plain Whole Milk Skyr is the Icelandic-style alternative — 0g added sugar, ~15g of protein per ¾-cup serving (more than the YoBaby), available at most mainstream grocers. Wallaby Organic Aussie Plain Whole Milk is the smoother Australian-style option — 0g added sugar, Costco's preferred organic plain whole-milk yogurt SKU. Chobani Plain Whole Milk Greek rounds out the set at 0g added sugar with higher-protein straining.
A note on serving and texture. For BLW, plain whole-milk yogurt is typically offered on a pre-loaded spoon (or in a self-feeding utensil) since babies can't yet scoop. The texture is BLW-appropriate (soft, doesn't require chewing, low choking risk). Most BLW guides recommend starting around 6 months and offering 2–4 tablespoons per session.
A note on FLAVORED YoBaby and Siggi's Kids Pouches. Both brands sell flavored variants marketed for babies and toddlers. The flavored versions add 5–8g of sugar per cup (YoBaby Banana, YoBaby Peach) and aren't appropriate for under-2 per the US Dietary Guidelines. The PLAIN versions of those same brands are the right pick — same brand, different SKU, very different sugar profile.
Below is every yogurt in our catalog at 0g of added sugar (Tier A or B), sorted alphabetically. For broader low-sugar yogurt options including 1–3g added sugar flavored picks (Tier C, fine for over-2), see our Low-Sugar Yogurt for Kids hub.
