The healthiest kids cereals balance low added sugar, real whole grains, and a clean ingredient list. Plain Cheerios (1g added sugar) is the most-recommended mainstream pick; Kashi 7 Whole Grain Puffs (0g), plain shredded wheat (0g), and Magic Spoon (0g, allulose-sweetened) are the consistent Tier A/B options. The mainstream flavored "kids cereal" aisle (Honey Nut Cheerios, Lucky Charms, Frosted Flakes, Froot Loops) averages 10–12g per serving and is not on this list.

"Healthy cereal for kids" is a broader question than "sugar-free cereal." Sugar matters, but so does fiber, whole-grain content, protein, and what's actually in the bowl beyond the marketing on the front of the box. This hub ranks kids cereals at 5g of added sugar or less per serving — Tier A through Tier D in our Sugar Tier System — sorted to surface the picks that hit on more than one nutritional axis.
Of the 199 kids cereals in our database, 7% exceed 5g of added sugar per serving (Tier E by our ranking, off this list). Average added sugar across the kids cereal category is 2.1g. The highest-sugar kids cereal we currently track is Raisin Bran Raisin Bran Cereal at 18g per serving — for context, that's nearly the entire daily 25g AHA added-sugar allowance from one bowl.
For this hub we widened the sugar threshold slightly (to 5g) compared to our Sugar-Free Cereal hub so that "low-sugar whole-grain" picks like plain shredded wheat, plain Cheerios, plain Mini-Wheats, and Three Wishes Cinnamon make the list alongside the strict 0g options. We did NOT widen to 7g+ because the added sugar load above 5g eats too much of a child's daily AHA allowance.
Brands that show up repeatedly. For Tier A/B (sugar-free): Kashi 7 Whole Grain Puffs, plain shredded wheat (any brand), Magic Spoon (the full line), Three Wishes Cinnamon. For Tier C (1–3g): plain Cheerios, plain rolled-oat instant oatmeal, Cascadian Farm Heritage Heirloom Whole Grain Flakes (1g), and Erewhon Crispy Brown Rice. The Tier D picks (4–5g) include Joe's O's (Trader Joe's house-brand Cheerios at 1g — Tier C, listed for reference), Cascadian Farm Original Multi Grain Squares, and the few "Frosted Mini-Wheats lite" variants that exist.
A note on whole grain and fiber. "Whole grain" on the front of the box is regulated only loosely — under the FDA's labeling rules, a cereal can claim "made with whole grain" if any percentage of the grain is whole, and "100% whole grain" only when all the grain is. For kid cereals, look at the fiber gram count on the Nutrition Facts panel. 3g+ of fiber per serving is the rough indicator of a real whole-grain product. Most flavored "kids cereal" SKUs land at 1–2g fiber regardless of front-of-pack claims.
A note on protein cereals. The newer "high-protein" cereal category (Magic Spoon, Three Wishes, Catalina Crunch, Cheerios Protein) lands in our list at varying tiers. Magic Spoon and Three Wishes are typically Tier A or B (0g added sugar, sweetened with allulose / monk fruit). Catalina Crunch is Tier A (0g). Cheerios Protein is Tier E (8g added sugar — the protein claim does not offset the sugar). Read the Added Sugars line, not the protein hero stat.
Below is every cereals product in our catalog at 5g of added sugar or less, sorted by added sugar ascending. Pair the lowest-sugar pick with fresh fruit and whole milk for a balanced bowl.
